# The human mortality follow-up

> Later life — Longevity Medical Wellness — The human follow-up at Longevity Medical Wellness: 266 elderly people, Epithalamin, mortality associations and the limits of an observational comparison.

**An elderly human cohort**

Here the subjects are already elderly. The preparation and the design deserve the same attention as the length of follow-up.

## Elderly participants receiving Epithalamin

The [6-8 year observational study followed 266 elderly people](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14523363/). It examined Epithalamin alone and in combination with thymalin, with mortality comparisons against untreated controls. This is the human finding that brings the starting-point question closest to the late-life situation I originally imagined.

The preparation's name deserves a moment. The [fly study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11087911/) and the [mouse lifespan study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14501183/) concern Epitalon. The human mortality paper names Epithalamin. Carrying the human result across to Epitalon would require evidence for that step; similarity between the names supplies no such comparison.

## The mortality association

Epithalamin alone was [associated with a 1.6-1.8-fold decrease in mortality compared with untreated controls](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14523363/). The study was observational, without random assignment or a placebo control. Its findings therefore describe an association within that follow-up.

The length of observation earns my interest. Following mortality over years asks a more direct longevity question than measuring a change in a culture dish. Yet a long follow-up cannot do the work of random assignment. Differences between the groups could contribute to their different outcomes.

A convincing follow-up would compare the exact preparation in a clearly described elderly population, with mortality and adverse outcomes followed together. The mortality observation gives that comparison a reason to happen. The association here provides a reason to investigate, while leaving a causal effect unresolved.

## Comparing youth with old age

The [developmental fly result](/during-development), the [mouse study beginning at 3 months](/young-mice) and this [elderly cohort](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14523363/) occupy different places in a life. They also differ in species, preparation and study design. Starting later is only one of the differences.

That prevents a tempting shortcut: treating them as a tidy series showing the same intervention working from youth to old age. Their shared interest in survival creates a conversation between experiments, with several unanswered comparisons inside it.

The human comparison becomes more demanding after the animal experiments. A direct test of a defined intervention begun at a stated age, with outcomes that matter to the people enrolled, would address that demand. These observations make that question compelling. They leave its answer open.
